A More Human Organization

Our most pressing issues – from innovation to ethics – turn out to be connected by the common currencies of human behavior. Organizations need to double down on what makes humans perform at their best, through learning made more social, cultures made more inclusive, voices made more empowered.

Value the Human

Deliberately or not, the way we work was not designed with humans in mind. In this session, we will unpack what a more human-centric workplace might look like — and what organizations could get out of it.

  • How would a more human organization be different?
  • What’s the return on investment for valuing the human aspect of work?
  • How can we measure and manage this idea?

What Growth Mindset is Doing for Organizations

NLI’s industry research shows that organizations that make growth mindset a cultural imperative see a real improvement in talent outcomes: increased employee engagement, greater resilience during hard times, and more. This session will address a combination of industry research and concrete strategies that will help you make the case for growth mindset initiatives in your own organization and institute growth mindset as a cultural norm.

  • How does growth mindset enable people to become more resilient?
  • How have companies embedded growth mindset into their daily processes?
  • What results have organizations seen from their growth mindset culture initiatives?

The Impact of Influence

As a leader, the ability to influence your colleagues is vital. Scientists in this session will discuss their cutting-edge research on persuasion, giving us an insight into our own persuasive abilities as well as how influence impacts others.

  • Why are some people more easily persuaded than others?
  • Do we accurately estimate our ability to influence those around us?
  • What are the pitfalls of being persuasive?

What Everyone Gets Wrong About Driving Behavior Change At Scale

Have you ever wondered why, despite your best efforts to scale your learning initiatives across the organization, you still don’t see the behavior change you’re hoping for? You think, We seem to be doing everything right, so why aren’t our programs successful?

Join this session to learn about the most common myths around driving behavior change at scale, and discover how you can make your initiatives more impactful by building them around science-based, field-tested principles.

The “Speaking Up” Continuum

Whether it’s a creative new idea or an observed altercation, we all have confidence that people will speak up “when the time is right.” But research shows that organizational cultures suppress voices far more often than they raise them. Join a panel of distinguished business leaders and scientists for a discussion on why we’re seldom as vocal as we’d like to be (hint: it’s a brain thing), and share practical tools for shifting from a culture of “I would speak up” to a culture of “I do speak up.”

  • Why don’t people speak up when they should?
  • How can I make it easier for my employees to speak up?
  • What organizational systems encourage a culture of speaking up?

Increase Inclusion

Science shows that diversity is beneficial, but many still struggle to actively include. The scientists on this panel will explain what their most recent research tells us about mitigating bias and increasing inclusion.

  • How can we evolve our inclusion strategies as diversity increases?
  • What role does representation play in fostering a sense of belonging?
  • Can you design for inclusion?

Bridge the Gap Between Thinking and Doing

Far too often, exciting new projects and concepts stall in the planning stage, never moving towards fruition. Fortunately, scientists are hard at work to find the keys to realizing our goals.
  • How should I choose which goals to prioritize?
  • What techniques can I apply to help me stick to my goals?
  • How can I motivate others to make a change or begin a new project?

Empathy in Action

One of the most uniquely human traits is our capacity for empathy. Whether it’s user experience or employee engagement, human behavior is driven by our need for others to empathize with our core drivers — like our desire for status, certainty, autonomy, relatedness, and fairness. Top researchers will reveal how our behavior is guided in this way — and how leaders can leverage this finding to improve everything from designing products to delivering better change management, to understanding engagement, to thinking about inclusion, to improving everyday conversations.

  • What is empathy and why does it matter at work?
  • How do we operationalize empathy in the workplace, everyday?
  • How will empathy help us be better leaders or change agents?

Create Clarity

Determining where to focus our attention has never been more important than today. When we’re overwhelmed by floods of information and competing priorities, what constructs can learning and change initiatives follow to ensure people have the clarity and capacity to perform at their best? This session combines scientific research and industry expertise to address the following questions:

  • What are the constraints of human cognitive capacity?
  • How can we process more information with the same capacity constraints?
  • What does it look like when organizations can clarify what's essential, and successfully make it stick in people's brains?

Humanize Performance Management

Clarity is hard to find when it comes to performance management. According to NLI’s research, at least half of organizations today are unclear about what changes to make, despite many more knowing they want to make a change.

In this session we will share initial findings from our current research in performance management, focusing on where companies are along their journey and how they are redesigning PM systems to be more human-centered.

We’ll address questions such as:

  • How does an employee-centric PM strategy fit into current organizational trends?
  • How can organizations ensure their performance management rework isn’t just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic, and that they are addressing what really matters: quality conversations?
  • What does science have to say about the conventional wisdom surrounding motivation and rewards in this new world of work?

Strike the Right Balance: When to take risks and when to play it safe

We make an immense amount of decisions everyday, some trivial and some of great importance. When making a big decision, we need to accurately perceive obstacles, while remaining open to new opportunities. Recent research can tell us more about how we interpret risk and what that means for our decisions.

  • What can prevent me from weighing options objectively?
  • Why do some people take risks often when others avoid it at all costs?
  • What external factors affect how I make decisions?

Collaborate Better with Continuous Communication

When teams are in sync, the results can be extraordinary, but when there’s discord within the group, the project can quickly derail. In this session, scientists will discuss what makes teams perform and function at their best.

  • How can you encourage all team members to speak up?
  • What can leaders do to increase cooperation?

Scale Learning

The phrase “workplace learning” summons the image of individuals sitting alone with a screen. But humans are naturally social — and so much of the best learning happens in social settings. In this session, we’ll dive into the unique value of social learning, and unpack practical strategies for ensuring that social learning is focused, productive and inclusive.
  • How is social learning different from individual learning?
  • How do you get the most out of social learning?
  • When is social learning effective and when is it not?
